Defensible Fire Space
With wildfires in California becoming increasingly more common, it is important to maintain a defensible fire space around your property. This is a buffer zone that increases safety by limiting fuel sources for fire to spread to.
Common ways to manage landscapes in regard to fire safety is to remove declining or crowded trees, deadwood from canopies, limbs encroaching on structures and lifting lower canopies off the ground. This can also include removal of shrubs which are considered to be too close to homes. Trees that are highly flammable such as bay laurel should be evaluated to see if they pose a risk.
